Surf Music Yeah or Ney?

Just wanted to get opinions from the Floydian world about Surf music. Not so much Beach Boys but the instruamentals like The Surfaris,Lively Ones, The Chantays,Dick Dale,Los Straitjackets,Aqua Velvets, to name a few. There are so many to list that have fallen to obscurity over the years. These are some of my faves

The Ventures
Lively Ones
The Pyramids
The Challengers
Dick Dale
The Chantays
Los Straitjackets
Laiki & the Cosmonauts

Oh YEAH! I love Surf!

One of my favorite genres. It's pretty easy stuff to play on guitar, and sounds great.

You've mentioned the primo groups, Mark, here's a few more
worth checking out:

Pollo Del Mar
Big Ray & the Futuras
Shadowy Men On A Shadowy Planet
Man...Or Astroman?
The Sub-Mersians
Four Piece Suit
The Omega Men
Simon Chardiet

Also, lately I'm into "Southern Culture On The Skids" which is something like The B52's meet Shadowy Men...somewhere in Alabama.

It's still rock and roll to me. Shadowy Men On A Shadowy Planet are a particular favourite.

SCotS are awesome.. I LOVE Banana Puddin' ...

Have you noticed the riff in that tune is lifted almost directly from Zepplin?

I saw them at the Trocadero a few years back and they rocked that place. The were throwing pieces of chicken into the crowd as they played 8 piece box. Quite amusing.

Re: Surf Music Yeah or Ney?

I bought Plastic Seat Sweat on the strength of Banana Puddin' alone.

So that's a Zep riff? I knew it was familiar.

My first impression was Peanut Butter by the Marathons.

Re: Surf Music Yeah or Ney?

Right now I am really into surf music. I've been searching all over the internet for surf guitar. The favorites I've come up with are of course Dick Dale, the Ventures, the Lively Ones, Link Wray, Blue Stingrays, and more.
I will go check out the other artists you have listed.

This has also led me to find surf influenced sounds, like psychobilly and the Dead Kennedys.

Please post more surf music.

Dick & Stevie Ray

Dick goes all "Brian May" on us!

Bonus points for those who can ID the two guys at 0:54 and 2:52.

Re: Surf Music Yeah or Ney?

My new band End Wave played our first show last saturday at a punk rock warehouse. I recorded it with a little sony digital tape recorder. The tracks can be heard at End Wave on MySpace Music - Free Streaming MP3s, Pictures & Music Downloads
There's a lot of surf and punk influence, most notably in the tracks "Wit Fit" and "Catch and Release the Beast". On the latter track, I tried to capture some Link Wrayisms with a few spaced out tremelo guitar parts. Check it out.
