What's up with the live vocals?

Howcome every time I see 'comfortably numb' performed live by Gilmour, the person singing the verse murders it?

I watched the video from the bcc show, and Wright is singing the verses, and it sounds like he's never even heard the song before.

Does anyone know anything about this?

My opinion is that anybody but Roger in the studio (with an infinite number of retakes) is going to sound sub-par on the verses of CN. The TDB and AMLOR tours are a pretty good way to do it (IMHO) - with the three voices, you can get a real 'dark' sound to the verses...these in contrast to David's sweet vocals on the refrain. It doesn't matter who sings the verses, the refrain and the two guitar solos is what makes this song a classic.

I understand that no one can replicate Roger's sound... but even Wright butchers the rhythm of it. How is that possible? He's played the song hundreds of times if you count rehearsal, the wall tour, division bell tour, etc etc etc

It certainly beats Bob Geldof speaking it totally out of rhythm!

Rick's never really sung it on his own. Sure, he's played it a ton, but never sung solo it a ton...

This is why I take issue with David billing himself as "the voice of Pink Floyd."

To be fair, hardly anyone performs Dave's parts as well as him during Roger's shows.

I thought Rick did a decent enough job. Much better on the second verse. I also agree that Wearing the Inside Out was great, although thats always been my favorite song off of DB. I'm pretty sure Rick's suffered through some depression looking at the lyrics.

I think it's Dave, and Roger that makes the Pink Floyd sound. And to me, TDB, and AMLoR, is half Pink Floyd sound, as well as all of Roger, and Dave's solo albums.

Half Pink Floyd sound.

Re: What's up with the live vocals?

well it has been confirmed, the whole is greater than the sum of the parts, or something like that. I agree though, any version of CN that doesnt have the both of them (Roger and Dave) is a disappointment. And Botley is right, Geldofs horrible spoken word rendition made me cringe. Cool guy, played Pink very well, but I never could dig the boomtown rats

I could never dig the movie the Wall. to be honest it sucks as much as The Who's Tommy movie by Ken Russell. And they are 2 of my favorite bands of all time. Just goes to show you Hollywood can screw up anything
