Re: "On An Island"

I'm probably the only one who thinks so, but....

A Pocketful of Stones starts out promising, but as soon as Dave starts singing, it sounds to me like he's making up the whole thing as he goes. The lyrics are more or less nonsensical (must be one of Polly's) and the melody just wanders about aimlessly.

But, diff strokes for diff folks, and all that.

Yup, you are.

Come to think of it, it is rather boring, isn't it? But I think it sounds OK.

Re: "On An Island"

I agree that "Pocketful of Stones" is the worst song on the album. The rest of the album I basically like but I think it's nowhere near as good as the Division Bell. The best song has got to be "On an Island."

Anyway I'm going tonight to Radio City so hopefully it will be awesome.

Apparently they're taking three songs at once, all edited for radio play: "Smile" for the European market and a three-track CD single to be released in May; "Take A Breath" for North American classic rock stations; and finally "This Heaven" for 'adult album alternative' stations.

On an Island

Thought this was interesting:

http://www.musicbox-online.com/revie...dg-island.html

Here are a few snippets:

"David Gilmour and Roger Waters have spent so much time sniping at one another about the status of Pink Floyd that they essentially have divided the band’s fans into warring factions that a temporary truce for last year’s Live 8 benefit won’t fix. It’s a shame, really, because Gilmour’s third solo outing On an Island ought to bring the two sides together. After all, Gilmour’s camp can tout how effectively their leader expanded upon and brightened the sonic textures that were the bread and butter of Pink Floyd’s legacy, and Waters’ followers can point out how much better the set might have been if their man had been involved in the project. Truth be told, both views are correct, hence the effort’s unifying power."

<snip>

"Still, there’s more to the outing than a mere visitation of familiar refrains. Smile, for example, recalls a meshing of John Lennon’s Love with Paul McCartney’s Junk, and although they appear only on the title track, David Crosby and Graham Nash lend to the set a communal air that is drawn straight from Crosby’s overlooked gem If I Could Only Remember My Name."

<snip>

"Regardless, On an Island still stands as the best thing that David Gilmour has crafted (with or without Pink Floyd) in several decades."

Interesting...I think I agree with the general gist of it, though I think in giving it 3 1/2 stars, he was too lenient. After reading the review, it would be easier to make the case for 3, and the last sentence, which concludes the piece seems to try to justify the bump in rating. Can't say I wouldn't of done the same, though, being a fan and all.

Re: On an Island

Very prescient; however, creating a new topic was a bit redundant. Threads merged.

Ah, the old "three-prong attack" trick.
Clever, but I hate to see Dave going "Neil Diamond" on us.

Re: "On An Island"

I reckon "Pocketful of Stones" starts out real good with the intro and "he's sending stones, skimming, flying, circles spinning out his time" (I dont know if those are the lyrics) but then after that bit, it does seem a bit aimless. If he was to keep that kind of structure for the verse it would be a very good song.

It's still not bad however

It's either clever or its scattershot. The results of this approach will determine which it is.

Re: "On An Island"

Well, I listened to it [it's been a while. why didn't i post anything sooner?] and
I liked it . perhaps the lyrics turned cheesy here and there, but whatever .
nothing much more to add.

Re: "On An Island"

Apparently, the photo next to those "Smile" lyrics in the album booklet was taken by Dave, when he got Polly and their kids to dance in front of the same Formentera windmill that graces the cover of More.
