white steps? white stairs?

The jacket for On An Island says the second line is:
"White steps in the moonlight"
But i swear he's saying "White stairs (stares?)"

Anyone have any input?

Re: white steps? white stairs?

Both the live and in-studio videos suggest that it's "steps."

It sounds like "steps" on my CD. Botley is correct.

I guess you're right. you can kinda hear stairs if you want to
but even then I still can make out Steps very clearly whilst trying to hear stairs

That's because you still ultimately believe it's "steps," so no matter what you'll think you hear steps.

Re: white steps? white stairs?

I hear steps, because he sings steps. Not stairs.

It's 'steps'. That's what he sings, that's what I hear.

Re: white steps? white stairs?

Who the hell cares? Hear whichever you wish...its the same thing. Steps/Stairs...pick one. Its not all that important. I heard it as in steps (footsteps, not steps on stairs). This is the only thing that makes sense to me. If stairs means anything different, and significant to you, please explain.

I interpreted it as white steps - as in steps painted white - as in the front of many of the white-washed Greek houses on the Island of Kastellorizon - the inspiration for this song.

Re: white steps? white stairs?

Maybe it's white steppes. Like, being in Kazakhstan on a winter night.

(I've got to get off my dead arse and go pick that up.)

Right you are. So, why does it matter if we're arguing steps or stairs? I guess if it can be discused, it will be.
