Re: Did Roger Waters go crazy?

That's Syd, except his name is Roger, and he ended up in his mom's house...

Some would say Roger (Waters) is crazy. Others would say it's just an ego thing

Re: Did Roger Waters go crazy?

Like terminalfrost said, Roger Keith "Syd" Barrett did suffer mentally because of a combination of underlying problems and heavy doses of acid. As far as anyone knows, he currently lives a low-key lifestyle and does not wish to associate in any way with his Pink Floyd past, as that is very traumatic.

As for Roger Waters, some would argue that he suffered from megalomania and paranoia earlier in his career (Animals, The Wall, and perhaps into his solo career). He behaved with cruelty towards his bandmates, particularly Mr. Wright, which I believe was a way of turning his internal frustrations with himself outward--I think he picked Mr. Wright for "symbolic" value, because the man was his complete opposite.

While he may have been unstable at that time (emphasis on MAY--this is only a possibility), he did not have a complete breakdown that we know of, and was certainly never hospitalised. He speaks of having been in therapy, but that is certainly not the same thing; many people have been in therapy who are not "stark raving mad", or anything like that. Currently, he seems to be doing well in starting to make amends for his past mistakes...though he still has a long way to go, IMHO.

Re: Did Roger Waters go crazy?

Thanks, Madcap Diamond...of course, I wouldn't WANT to publish it, because it could be wrong--and especially when you're talking about someone's mental state, I'm sure you can see where that's a bit of a risk!

Methinks FWr is a bit wet for Mr. Wright.

Talk about an unbiased opinion.

Re: Did Roger Waters go crazy?

Nah i think Madcap really should publish his diagnosis. You sounded like and M.D, Hell you know what I think we should just start giving that explanation for Roger to anyone who askes. Isn't that what is supposed to happen with legends (i.e. Elvis faked his death, so did Jim Morrison) It is beautiful explanation lets go with it!

Oh, dear!!! I've never heard this expression before. That is quite nasty!

For fixxlevy, who praised my "continuity", I suppose I should take that as a compliment. (Though in that case I'd say that whether or not you agree with the RIGHTNESS of it, RW certainly singled out Mr. Wright for "special" treatment.)

Again, I am not a professional--that is all conjecture...and I think we do need to be careful in adopting any sort of "official" explanation, especially when it's written by the fans. I just wrote that as my opinion.

Re: Did Roger Waters go crazy?

Quite sorry to have offended you FWr, but it is well known, and admitted by Mr. Wright, that the aforementioned keyboardist was contributing very little to The Wall. Granted Roger treated him like dirt, but I think he treated everyone like dirt. Any special "treatment" Mr. Wright recieved may, or may not, have been deserved. You seem to be quick to praise, and hesitant to admonish, Mr. Wright.

Anyway, that's my opinion, I am probably just as biased, but no one has pointed it out yet.

Wet for you,
ME

Re: Did Roger Waters go crazy?

Granted--I fully understand that Mr. Wright was having his own problems (though I suspect his inability to contribute was IN PART because he was not well received when he did).

But I have myself been in a situation when I was having some problems and instead of trying to help me by giving support and kindness, I was treated quite cruelly. This only fostered an attitude in me that made my problems worse--I became very withdrawn.

So REGARDLESS of whether or not Mr. Wright was having problems...Mr. Waters' behaviour was inexcusable. That is not how you ought to treat someone who's having problems, because that just makes the problems worse. And that is wrong.
