April 20th
1920- Gavvy Cravath the Phillies manager put himself in as a pinch hitter and beat the NY Giants with a 3-run homerun 3-0. It was his last in the majors.

'pinch hitter'....'majors'? Being a heathen from over the pond, I need a 'baseball' dictionary to understand some....erm....most...erm...all of this. I'm intrigued Mark, tell us all!

Re: On This Day

April 21th
It's celebrated the Grounation Day, the most important Rastafari festival, in honor of Haile Selassie's 1966 visit to Jamaica.

God man, that is obscure. I'd like to have you as my call-a friend if I ever make it to "Who Wants to be a Millionaire--Philly edition"

Re: On This Day

In Baseball, a Pinch hitter is a common term for a substitute batter. Batters can be substituted for at any time the ball is dead; the manager may use any player not yet in the game as a substitute. Pinch hitters are often used to replace a starting player when a substitute is thought to have a better chance of reaching base or helping other runners to score.

"Majors": major league: the most important league in any sport (especially baseball)

Re: On This Day

Thanks for clearing that up for Eddy. Bull is absolutely right with that except he left out the manager part which today you never see player/ manager but back in a day were common site. I think Pete Rose was the last manager to actually play in a game. in the 1980's.

April 21st 1918
Baron Von (The Red Baron)Rictofen is shot down behind enemy lines an the mystery of who shot him down is debated.

Re: On This Day

I say it was Billy Bishop! Go Canada!

On this day, Romulus founded Rome on seven hills in 753 BC. Also, the man who would become Iggy Pop was born in 1947.

As a related point of interest, 7 Kansas high school students were arrested yesterday who had planned to copycat the Columbine shootings in their own high school. Scary.

Actually, it was some anonymous grunt in the trenches who made a lucky one-in-a-million shot with his .303 SMLE as Von Richhofen flew overhead.

A very un-romantic way for the greatest WWI ace to die.
