Trying to get into Hendrix

So I shamefully admit I know very little of Jimi Hendrix's music, what would people recommend as a first album to check out, or the greatest hits maybe?

If someone asked the same question about Floyd I would tell them to check out DSOTM, I don't even know that I'd recomend Echos because all the songs are out of context.

Re: Trying to get into Hendrix

Hendrix did not release a ton of records and there are about 20 different greatest hits compilations you can find.

"Are You Experienced?" and "Axis: Bold as Love" contain most of the hits you'll be familiar with as well as some unnoticed gems (esp. Experienced). The other two full length albums, "Electric Ladyland" and "Band of Gypsy's" I am not so familiar with but have heard good things about. There are a couple other ones I think..South Saturn Delta and House of the New Rising Sun something something? id on't know i don't know!!!!

and it's Jimi, not Jimmy.

Electric Ladyland would be my choice, but as 2HB says there are lots of good compilations to get you started.

"Axis: Bold as Love" is the first Hendrix album i ever heard. Got me hooked. But you should also check out "Martin Scorsese Presents The Blues: Jimi Hendrix" listening to "Voodoo Chile" is an experience all on its own.

Re: Trying to get into Hendrix

I'd try your library, see if they have any Hendrix cds. And then get them all and burn them. That's what I do..
Blue Wild Angel is amazing, if you want live, or live at Woodstock.

I agree with Eddy on Electric Ladyland as his best because he was finally allowed to produce his own record and get the sound he wanted. Smash Hits is a great starter though if you want a hits package.
