what was floyd thinking?

i dont know if this is true, but i did read it in an interview on this site, but i dont know if it was a joke when they said it or what. thats why i put it in rumors. its an interview with roger waters.

N.S. I remember I went to E.M.I. studios in the winter of '74, and the band
were recording stuff with bottles and rubber bands... the period I'm talking

The stuff they were working on was called, someone correct me if I'm wrong; the Household Objects Project, in which they made music with everyday objects: rubber bands, wine glasses(which can be heard at the beginning of SoYCD), spoons, you know like jug and wash board stuff only..Floyd

I wouldn't say it was a stupid idea, and I don't believe they think so either. perhaps it is not feasible, but definitely the experimentation led to some great sounds and evolved over time.

I don't mean the concept in general, I mean making an entire album out of it.

Considering that there is some very high-quality music that other people (not to mention members of Pink Floyd, earlier in their careers) have made on non-musical instruments, I'd say you're being a bit stuck-up in your assessments, Joey. If anyone could do it properly, it'd be the Floyd. Nowadays, such a task would be a lot easier to accomplish, what with the benefits of digital samplers and so forth.

Using partly-full wine glasses for background texture is actually a great idea, which other people had previously thought of (there's a less-accomplished example on Paul McCartney's first solo record). However, for "Shine On You Crazy Diamond", they came up with the very resourceful technique of putting sub-mixes of individual chord clusters on each fader of the mixing board, so it could be played like a keyboard. It's almost staggering to me that they were so far ahead of their time with those kinds of sampling techniques, and yet still found a way to get usable results.

Yes. They incorporated it into Shine On and came up with some cool ideas. Lots of people use samples of noises incorporated into music that IS created with musical instruments and it can be brilliant.

All I'm saying is, it's not very practical to create an entire record out of rubber bands and coke cans.

The whole household object thing seemed pretty cool to me, I would have been definitly interested in hearing it if there was any known recordings of what they've done. might have been horrible crap, but I'm curious about what it might have sounded like.

no it doesn't mean it's good, I for one can't stand corp. clegg just cause of the kahzoo, but in terms of them using rubber bands and the lot, I mean c'mon it was worth a shot

Well;they certainly can make music out of everyday objects.On Alans' breakfast the sound of fire being lighted and the cackling of the frying pan are as much part of the music as the sounds of crickets on Bill hubbard.
