| Hey lads- thought that you might be interested in reading this review of 'The Virgin Suicides OST' by Air: Given their art house leanings, you could have reasonably expected Air's first film music to have accompanied a culty Euro flick. Not so: these 11 pieces were made for The Virgin Suicides, a bittersweet American tragedy starring James Woods, Kathleen Turner and Danny DeVito, and directed by Sofia Coppola. As with all film scores, context is all. The Virgin Suicides is set in the '70s, and centres around a fairly simple plot: one of five unfeasibly beautiful sisters kills herself, the family withdraw into a hermetic existence, and the local adolescent males are left to worship them from afar. Melancholy, wistfulness and retro aesthetics - it's pretty obvious why Nicolas Godin and JB Dunckel got the call. The result is an eclectic selection of musical sketches, few of which pay any heed to orthodox song structure. Some, like Dark Messages, teeter pleasantly close to what used to be called ambient, others sound like half-completed electronic doodles, and a couple could have fitted snugly on to 1998's Moon Safari: the best example being Playground Love, a Serge Gainsbourg-esque hymn to teenage lust that provides the score with its inexplicably eerie theme. However, the most notable aspect of Virgin Suicide is the resemblance of Bathroom Girl, The Word Hurricane and Suicide Undercover to Dark Side Of The Moon-era Pink Floyd. Given the film's period setting, it's a canny reference point, and the last piece affords the score its admirably affecting finale: six meandering minutes during which a slowed-down voice helpfully recites a poetic reading of the film's story. Incidentally, anyone bemoaning the fact that a movie about '70s America has been scored by two modern Parisians can take heart from The Virgin Suicides' accompanying OST, which features Styx, 10cc and Gilbert O'Sullivan. More erudite consumers, it seems, will be better off sticking with the French guys. Head Pot Noodling Sell Floaty Gallic dance duo score Ms Coppola's latest. | I don't think it has much in common with Dark Side of The Moon AT ALL. |

| I'd definitely query the PF link there. They don't sound like Dark Side at all, not even close. |

| I might pick up 'The Vigin Suicides OST' on the strength of that recommendation. I must have glossed over it when it was first printed... The Chancellor |
