Re: An excellent idea

Oops, excuse me please. My last post is not quite where I wanted to go with this thread, I tried to avoid getting too negative and critical but they came out anyway. This thread is by no means meant as an attack but as a a request and nothing more.

Re: An excellent idea

I definitely agree that we all should be able to play with our own avatars here, for all the good reasons that have already been explained.

Re: An excellent idea

Lars,

First of all, I am tired of you throwing around this "Golden Age" term. It is not one that I use and can't recall BoaB using it either. You continue to attack Pearlwaters, even though she no longer visits here, and your attitude towards anybody that isn't in full agreement with you is less than welcoming. Call an exterminator to get rid of whatever bug is up your ass.

Second, you claim that the decision is up to Paulo and Paulo alone, then why didn't you send him this request in an email to him? I'll tell you why, you thought the entire site would be in agreement and Paulo would have to make the change. You didn't expect someone disagreeing with you, so you decided to publicly blast them.

Also, to answer your question why would this site need so much money to keep running? To pay for wastes of bandwidth and space like this thread.

I still say it is a fair deal, pay some money and you get some advantages. Paulo makes the rules and you can appeal to him to change them, but if he doesn't: Like it or lump it.

No harm, no foul,
Damo

PS Melo, Mr. Bull is in reference to Byron also known as Bride of a Bull.

Paulo is the only one able to decide which is the best choice with the most benefits. I still have a hard time believing the custom avatar and status are really an important source of income which the site can't do without, if they were that would be a reason to keep them. Paulo is the only one able to tell if there is actually. I ask him to please ask himself the question which has the most benefits in the end. Would making them free again really result in a lot of loss? Would that really put an end to much of the site's income? Or would you barely notice it at all? Once the last would be the case I'd say changing it back seems like the wise choice. It's up to Paulo and no one else really, only he can define each choice and it's benefits exactly like they are. APFFN members like Mr Bull already saying that it should stay like this are not looking at the facts obviously.

Okay, Deranged, since you mentioned me and, in some respects, misused me in your above posts, and granted you were contrite in your last unquoted post in this thread, I won't bother rising to the obvious baiting, but will only respond directly to your misconcieved and unfair barbs. NNJ has, as is increasingly the case, again pre-empted any further reply I might have made by typing the same sentiments I hold.

So, on to my one-line post that appeared to you to have both "missed the point" and demonstrated a "bitchy attitude." I voiced my opinion without any comment or hyperbole. I omitted my usual smilie for no better reason than I chose not to use it. The facts of my statement are still the same: you cannot play (change, experiment, etc.) with the avatar feature here unless you were a member since before Paulo made his changes, or if you are a contributor. If you must have avatar features to play (change, experiment, etc.) with, and if you don't qualify as above here, then your obvious choice is to do it elsewhere, n'est ce pas?

I contributed to this site to repay the debt of the many hours of, to me, invaluable yet free entertainment, enjoyment and a wealth of information regarding my favourite music group. I expected nor desired any special treatment, recognition or financial reward, such as product discount vouchers, say.

Still, as a contributor, I would suffer the same loss of the site as much as a non-contributor should Paulo one day just decide to hang the whole thing up and retire it for good. I would have no legal recourse for recompense for my contribution nor would I claim any. Call me sad, but I think it no harm to show one's support for the use of someone else's web plaything.

It appears to me, Deranged, that you have difficulty realising the underlying nature of things is change and even things here in electronica change with time. Always remember it takes money to host a website. It's Paulo's hobby and our rights here will always only extend as far as he allows...thus far, it's fairly egalitarian. You are ever welcome to attempt your own version of this site or format and to make it as you please. If you do, please let us all know how much it actually costs to maintain for as long as this one.

Free things are never always free. Freeserve here got off to a fabulous start, too fabulous at first with over subscription of their free ISP service. Eventually it got listed on the stock market and crashed spectacularly. Some poor investors say its IPO was the last straw in the UK's "New Paradigm/Internet" market bubble which quickly burst soon after Freeserve floated in Spring 2001. The point here is, even now you must pay for their service which was once free.

Things change. Get over it. Move on.

Thanks for reading,
Byron

Re: An excellent idea

Despite what's been said, it doesn't change the fact that this is the only forum I've ever been to that requires users to pay a fee to access all features (and I have been and still go to a number of forums that are as big or bigger than this one). It's one thing to ask for donations (which many sites don't even allow you to do give), but another to more or less hold features ransom.

Sure, it's not a big deal, but it certainly made me disgruntled when the change was announced. What many of you fail to realize is that without the users on this site, there would be no site. It would be boring and dull. Not to mention, no one would want to advertise with a low traffic site...and that is where the funding money is made. If it isn't enough money to fun the site (which, on other sites, it usually is), then donations should be requested. As many of you have stated, you paid the fee to support the site, not to get the features or join an elite. That would lead us to assume that the withholding of those features would have no bearing on your decisions to contribute, right? I'm sure even more would open their wallet if they knew the site was in dire straits.

So, I don't really see how it could be any more obvious what needs to be done from here. Everyone should get their features, and those who want to support the site should continue to do so.

Re: An excellent idea

Nobody's questioning Paulo's right to decide whatever he wants on his webspace... this just to state the obvious, but it seems it's necessary to state the obvious these days. People are just trying to understand what's more convenient for the website, if Paulo really cannot afford the change, fine, so be it. I frankly doubt that would be a direct cost for the forum maintenance/hosting but well, whatever... I'll just point out that a little more fun could attract more users, and more users mean more people that maybe would be interested in supporting APFFN, as Brainwashed already said. By the way, what's wrong in publicly post a suggestion, good or bad, for the website?
