Thumbs up Surgeon stops surgery to donate own blood to patient!

Quote:
WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. - A top New York heart surgeon who was doing a mercy-mission operation on an 8-year-old boy in El Salvador had to scrub out in the middle of the procedure so he could donate his own rare-type blood to the patient.

Dr. Samuel Weinstein said he had his blood drawn, ate a Pop-Tart, returned to the operating table and watched as his blood helped the boy survive the complex surgery.

Full Story

Hmmm, I'm B(-)ve.

Maybe I ought to donate more often, yeah?

I thought it was a nice story

I've never donated blood -- but I probably should. I don't even know what blood type I am. But if a couple of pints of my blood could save a person's life, it would totally be worth it.

It's not simple, you have to fill out some health history forms. I think one condition is if you did any operation in the last year, you are not apt to be one.

Re: Surgeon stops surgery to donate own blood to patient!

As far as I know you must be healthy, be at least 17 years old or 16 years old if allowed by state law, weigh at least 110 pounds, and not have donated blood in the last 8 weeks (56 days).

I think certain things like having lived abroad in the past 6 months might prevent you from donating. In anycase, professionals at the donation site make the final call.
