| "How come they wanted the water to be unrippled? What effect were they aiming for? Reflection? " Well, Pedge, since you asked... The photographers and other at Hypgnosis (the folks who designed the album graphics for this and many other Floyd releases) claimed that the band wanted to juxtapose ideas that suggested presence AND absence at the same time - perhaps alluding to Syd Barrett's influence on the band despite the fact that he had been physically absent for several years when they recorded Wish You Were Here. So they thought a diver piercing a lake but leaving no trace or evidence of his presence (the absent ripples) would be a nice metaphor for this duality. Similar, perhaps, to the idea behind the "invisible man" in the picture of the desert dunes - he's there (his clothing is), but really not there completely. -Pink Anderson (tried to swim in Mono Lake once but the water was too cold) |
