If I may be so bold as to answer for big B:

Yarn = a story (an old English slang term)

both are great actually.
Not to nitpick, but Clarke wrote the novel based on the screenplay, not t'other way round. The screenplay was developed from Clarke's short story, The Sentinel, worth reading in its own right.

Also, it's hard NOT to be bored by 2001 when you watch it on a screen less than 25 feet wide.
