| Does Floyd have a future? Crystal ball readings here! My skepticism prior to Live 8 was unfounded; in light of that I've softened my disbelief (somewhat) in the possibility of a reunion — if only for just one... more... gig. With Richard sadly no longer with us, public demand for a reunion seems to have died down. Roger himself recently commented that he was not a fan of reunions where half of the band are dead anyway. Well, Syd and Rick were only 2/5ths of Pink Floyd, so there is still hope! It's all down to finding some way to reignite enthusiasm in David really, as Roger and Nick seemed to quite enjoy playing Live 8 and would probably do something similar again in a heartbeat if David agreed to it for some suitably charitable cause. I think that all three surviving members still would be able to make a Pink Floyd live show work, with the excellent lineup of backing musicians that accompanied them at Live 8. Jon Carin did a fabulous job of playing Rick's keyboard parts on Roger's tours; perhaps another multi-instrumentalist, like Andy Bown from the original Wall shows, could also play secondary keyboards as well as bass when Roger feels like playing rhythm guitar (as Tim Renwick did on the Live 8 arrangement of "Wish You Were Here"). There is also a possibility that Dick Parry could take this role and play simple keyboard textures, as he reportedly did on the late 1970s Pink Floyd tours, in addition to saxophone. If Ian Ritchie can do all that for Roger, Dick can certainly do it for Floyd! As long as David is willing to let it happen, Roger could even sing some more lead vocal parts. For example, having him sing the verses of "Time" (as he did on the original demo) worked quite well in those solo shows from the past decade, and David could switch to singing Rick's part in tribute to him. "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" might be interesting as a duet between the two of them, as "Wish You Were Here" was at Live 8, affording both men a few verses each. It would certainly be strange to hear that song in the context of Pink Floyd without Rick's keyboards, but David's solo arrangement from 2001 was nice enough. Maybe an "unplugged" or acoustic-based Floyd is our last best hope at seeing them onstage again? At "The Madcap's Last Laugh" tribute show for Syd in 2007, Richard played in public for the final time and sang "Arnold Layne" with David, Nick & Jon Carin (Andy Bell from Oasis played bass because Roger had already made his excuses and left the building!)... and although they weren't billed as such, it could very well be the final bow for Pink Floyd. But would that low-key event really be a suitable end to their live career? I think not. I'd love to hear some obscure old gems that have never been played in public, from "Fearless" and "Crying Song", to "Crumbling Land", "Free Four"... possibilities are rife for that sort of territory in a longer time slot than what was alotted for Live 8; a festival would be inappropriate, but perhaps a fund-raising one-off gig, like what Led Zeppelin did for Ahmet Ertegun? C'mon, boys! Take the plunge before another one of you keels over. Last edited by Botley; 03-20-2010 at 04:40 PM. |
