Re: Whats The Wall All About????

There is an explanation here: http://members.surfsouth.com/~breezy/

It is by no means the right explanation, but it is a shot.

Re: Whats The Wall All About????

Hey Shawn

The Wall is absolute rubbbish and unfortunately, no more than self indulgent shit (on lyricist Roger Waters part) at best. Don't waste your time trying to analyse it, as there are much better and certainly, more worthy Pink Floyd albums to be heard and studied.

Start with 'Piper At The Gates Of Dawn' and follow on from there. Look on the internet for the chronological order that each album was released in and simply buy albums using that as a guide.

As far as disenfranchised teens go, Roger was WELL into his 30's when he wrote The Wall and should have known better. I'm not a fan myself, but there are other albums and artists out there for whom, you may find it easier to relate to and gain from. Roger Waters is 'just a sad old man, all alone, dying of (metaphorically) cancer' and hardly relevant to the youth (or indeed, any generation) of today.

A selected discography:

The Piper at the Gates of Dawn

A Saucerful of Secrets

Atom Heart Mother

Meddle

Obscured By Clouds

The Dark Side of the Moon

Wish You Were Here

Animals

Works

Is There Anybody Out There?

Echoes: The Best Of Pink Floyd

These albums should give you more of an insight as to why the music of Pink Floyd spans generations (and cultures) and continues to influence music the world over.

Everything that comes after these albums unfortunately falls well short of the mark of quality and pathos that the Floyd once stood for. Take my advice and get the above albums in order and then, once you have connected with each and for whatever reason, move onto the following:

More

Ummagumma

The Wall

The Final Cut

A Momentary Lapse of Reason

Delicate Sound of Thunder

The Division Bell

P * U * L * S * E

I also suggest that you browse around this site (specifically checking out the history and origins of the band) and that should put you on the road to feeling quietly smug in the company of all your Linkin Park appreciating/'totally hating their parents forever' mates.

I realise that I must sound somewhat patronising on this subject, but, if truth be told, I don't care that much. Pink Floyd is something that I feel quite strongly about, as with everyone else that visits this site regularly and it's nice to be in the position of being able to help a fledgling Floydian (Learning to fly, if you will) on to the correct path.

Cheers and welcome,

Mark

Do the smart thing and ignore fixxy the drunken fool. I'm suprised he didn't go off on one of his Sigur Ros spiels.

Re: Whats The Wall All About????

First, the worms don't represent society, but rather they stand for anything bad or detrimental to Pink's well-being.

Second, fixxy is wrong. While The Wall is not the album I once thought it was, it is still one I enjoy, and there is a message somewhere in there that took me years and hundreds of relistens to fully understand (if I understand it all)

Thirdly, fixxy is right. The Wall pales in comparison to WYWH or Dark Side or select tracks from other early albums.

Re: Whats The Wall All About????

As far as I can tell, the Wall is all about someone who becomes very self-centred and paranoid(as shown by The Trial),when he had everything going for him. Other than that it is just Rog having a good rant at the world.
