Your First Post?

On a whim, I thought that I, the mighty fixxlevy, would start a thread devoted to our beautiful initial entries on this most wondrous of sites. I simply put down what I was doing (drinking a Stella Artois 'big' bottle) and slowly meandered, nay filtered, through to my computer room and set about doing exactly that, so here it is....

The First Post thread

(You know how everyone raves about how... ) ...The Dark Side Of The Moon is so sonically superior, and how it's one of the best stereo 'samplers'? Well, how come the bias is totally off to the left on side A and slightly less so on side B?? And on the MFSL CD version, it's in favour of the right & slightly "muffled". What's that all about then??? Ay????

From: KCoryat [at] mfi.com (Karl Coryat)
Subject: Roger Waters

Karl Coryat from Bass Player here. I wrote a retrospective on Pink Floyd's
Animals several issues ago and was surprised to hear from David Gilmour himself.
I had mentioned Gilmour's bass playing on "Sheep" (which is fairly well known)
but thought Roger Waters had played on "Sheep." I also mentioned that David had
dissed Roger's playing in the press several times before. I agree "Pigs" is a
great line well performed, but sadly it isn't Roger. (Funny that Gilmour
describes bass playing as a "chore.")

- --

About your Classic Revisited piece on Pink Floyd's Animals [March '98]: I don't
think I ever described Roger Waters's bass playing as "horrible." If I did I
must have been having a bad day. He was a good bass player when he wanted to be - which he often didn't - and when he didn't he often asked me to take over
the chore. On Animals Roger played bass on "Dogs" and I played bass on "Sheep"
and "Pigs." Most of the bass line on "Sheep" (apart from the ending) was what
Roger had been playing onstage, as we had been performing it as "Raving and
Drooling" for a couple of years. However, in the studio Roger had a rhythm
guitar part he wanted to play, so we swapped roles. On "Pigs" the part and the
playing are mine.

Brainless twaddle, I admit, but having signed on a month earlier, I figured I'd better say something.

I love all the obvious choices, also these:

1. Astronomy Domine (Pulse)
2. Fat Old Sun
3. Murder (About Face)

This thread. I edited it two minutes later, as I am wont to do.

Hello everyone... I'm from Canada and this is my first post here. I was just looking on the official pinkfloyd.co.uk website (which is pretty damn cool) and I saw James Guthrie's comments about the song compilation process. He mentioned 20 songs that were considered for the Echoes compilation, but didn't make it. I thought it would be cool to compile them into an "Echoes II" using his choices. So here's "Echoes II: Raving and Drooling." You can try it out yourself with a crossfader and some free time.

Disc One
Speak to Me
Breathe
Interstellar Overdrive
Young Lust
Careful With That Axe, Eugene
Mother
Your Possible Pasts
Fearless
Fat Old Sun
The Gunner's Dream
Atom Heart Mother Suite

Disc Two
If
Grantchester Meadows
Paranoid Eyes
The Scarecrow
Dogs
San Tropez
Nobody Home
Chapter 24
A Saucerful of Secrets
Brain Damage
Eclipse

Re: Your First Post?

Mine was related to BDG playing bass on a good chunk of the PF albums. Pete (aka Driven) came to my rescue with the interview from BDG that supported the position:

02-22-2002, 07:52 PM

I agree that Roger is a genius (songwriting and concepts), but he is hardly a great musician. Dave played bass on roughly half of Floyd's albums, and Roger can't play the fretless bass (have you ever seen him play it on Hey You?)

I think Roger has mellowed through the years (as is evidenced by his softer tone on the recent VH-1 shows on the band and The Wall. To me, the band was always best when all were contributing - Rick and Dave write excellent music together, and Roger's lyrics and concepts can't be beat!

Ahhh...those were the days
