Re: wut a great day!

It seems like new members always put a bunch of smilies in their first (and usually only) post.

The smilies are okay but the mangled English is testing.

Welcome, share and enjoy, ChewingBubble.

Re: wut a great day!

That and the fact that they create a new thread for one post. If you don't plan on posting at least semi-regularly, don't make a stupid-ass welcome thread.

Welcome, share and enjoy, ChewingBubble.

But let's do keep in mind that a lot of people. perhaps even most, don't have english as a first or second language, and deserve extra points for the willingness to try - it's not always the currently fashionable illiteracy.

Re: wut a great day!

I doubt that Bubbles here is new to this language, because I don't think that someone new to English would use the words "dis, dat, or ma." Ebonics exaggerated to this degree is usually used by suburban, white, American 12 year-olds. Jumping right into Ebonics would be confusing for someone who is just learning our humble language.

There is much merit in what you suggest, but considering the correct usage AND spelling of most other words, I don't think in this case it is applicable. I suspect it's SMS text-speak.

In the end, it's hardly that important. Certainly not as important as making CB feel welcome and encouraging him/her to share and enjoy.

But "dis," "da" and "dat," are f**king appalling, IMO, and more likely to encourage non-English speakers and writers to believe that it is acceptable English, when it patently "ain't."
