Vinyl Playback Speeds

I'm relative new to vinyl collecting so I have a question, since my player can only play at 33 and 45 rpms.

I know generally 12" LPs play @ 33 1/3 rpm and 7" singles play @ 45 rpms.

However, what I was wondering is at which speed would 12" singles and 10" singles play?

Wow - here's a blast from the past. My old 12 inch singles played at 33 1/3 rpm. Not sure about the 10 inch disks.

Ok cool. 10" are less common anyhow.

I'm just worried I'm gonna see a cool 12" single some place and I'm gonna buy it and get it home, then find out it spins at 78 rpms and I'll be out of luck.

Ah yes , the wonder of vinyl, complete with hisses and scratches which sound like bacon sizzling away in the background and which still sounds better than the sterility of CD's.

I have both 7" and 12 " singles which play at 45rpm and 33 1/3rpm It all depends on what the record company has decided to use. I haven't seen a 10" single for some time, and in terms of speed, again it depends on what the record company has decided to issue. Most vinyl will have the record speeds printed on them and its worth having a good squint at the label. In my experience 78 rpm was used mostly for really ancient vinyl from the 1920's onwards (and maybe a bit before that....Bessie Smith, Count Basie etc) and I can't see any record company using 78rpm speed nowadays, as there would be little advantage, because most folks wouldn't have the facility to play it. My current record deck only has two speeds. 33 & 45 and that has been sufficient for my needs. Hope that helps.

Re: Vinyl Playback Speeds

As Eddie says, nobody's really seriously used 78 RPM since the dawn of time so you don't need to worry about that... although, mind you, one or two semi-recent singles on Warp Records play at that speed. They sound alright at 45 RPM anyway, strangely enough.

Re: Vinyl Playback Speeds

I play my old ones that I got for Christmas awhile back at 33, like terminalfrost up there, and mine sound very good.
