Don't do Drugs

Throughout my year with the sweet herb I was under the false idea that I was somehow "enlightened". What I realized is that I became lazy and content to do nothing. This was fine for my senior year in high school, which really required me to do nothing, and it wasn't too much of a problem for my first semester of college (which fortunately was mostly composed of basic music courses) which also required very little of me. However I realized that if I want to have any sort of motivation or do any REAL mind expanding, I can't be toking every chance I get just because it makes things better. I've come to the realization that being completely satisfied with nothing (in a bad way) is not my idea of things being better. I want to learn. I want to progress.

Fortunately I learned this after only 1 year amidst the purple haze. And I'm still only 17 so if I follow any sort of fate similar to that of the "average" human, and happen to live another 50 or so odd years, I didn't waste too much time.

I don't know if this should be in "essays" or the "dark side" or one of the other "Drug" threads but I thought this sort of thing could be it's own topic. Has anyone else had this experience with drugs? Because I would really like to hear about it. I don't hear much deep advice from the older people on here who I'm sure have a lot of it to share. I mean that sincerely, for once I'm not taking the piss. I'm very interested in learning and sharing experiences and take what I can from people who know a whole lot more than me. I guess you could say I'm maturing.

On another note, it seems that we all tiptoe around any sort of serious issues and forget that everyone here is a real human. Everybody in this forum faces the same dilemma. We all breathe, breathe in the air, we're all faced with what to do with our time here in existence. And fun is great, and probably what most of you come here for...but I've been noticing a lot lately that most people fill their time and energy with distractions from the humbling truth that we are merely human. But in being human, we also can relate to each other, but those distractions cause us to harm one another and generally live lives of poor quality.

Well now I'm just rambling. You get my point.

Re: Don't do Drugs

From what I have experienced, it all depends on the type of person you are. If you like to smoke occasionally, just when other people are doing it... that's ussually not a big problem. However, if you smoke all the time, and when you're not high you think about smoking, well... you need to stop.

Personally, if I were as serious about music as you appear to be, I wouldn't smoke at all, because I would want my music to reflect myself, which would be hard to do if I were high.

I think Two-headed Boy wants serious people to post here. Try not to turn this thread into some off topic rambling.

I'm a serious person! How dare you accuse me of being anything less than serious! I am ALWAYS serious! I have won awards for my seriousness!

Anyone else won any awards?

Hm.

The mind boggles. But I think I'll leave Joey to speak for himself.

Well I was serious. I hoped to generate some real conversation but this is understandable due to my not so serious history.

Re: Don't do Drugs

Hi Joey,

I used to have a hard time with cigarettes and alcohol.
As of now, it's down to just alcohol (quit smoking and it's been months now. Took me seven fucking years to get to this point tho).

Pretty soon, I will have mastered alcohol as well.

I can understand what you say - I have a hard time during weekends because of my habitual imbibing of spirits. It's hard to resist...

cheers,

Moderation is the key. Which is easy to say but hard (for me) to practice.

However, it is a must to be creative and motivated. Just try to slow down and see if that does anything.

It's OK to be multi-faceted.

While I don't know if Hunter S. Thompson ever said the above, it's a quote from Bill Murray as Thompson in the film Where the Buffalo Roam. Considered in the context of Thompson's recent suicide, I find it rather poignant.

Your moderation comment is one those obvious things that seem universal, but upon closer examination isn't really. The AA people, for instance, feel it's the first drink that's the problem, since the point is that out-of-control people simply can't stop once they start.

I've lost friends due to substance abuse. While I consider smoking pot to be probably the least damaging of any intoxicants available, I believe you're absolutely correct in your assessment about being completely satisfied with nothing.

That said, one of the best programmers I know can't write shit without a little 'red-eye'. In the creative arts, Hesse wrote Journey to the East, Coleridge wrote Xanadu, and let's not dwell too hard on Yeats. This doesn't say that drug use confers literary genius, but it does say that the effect is subjective, and absolutes may or may not apply.

There have been far more tragedies than success stories. It probably surprises BoaB that I rarely ever drink anymore, given our shared history, but I simply have better things to do these days - in my case, I spend my time with my kids. If getting loaded made that better for me, I might do that - but it doesn't.

So, the key to me is less moderation than knowing what I want, and focusing my attention on that.

22 months doesn't seem not-recent, but that may just be my perspective.

Still poignant, tho.
