Re: The Hip Hop Thread

Pardon me then, I assumed you were being an ass and trying to prove that rap/hip hop is only about violence etc and a load of drivel.

Gnarls Barkley, incidentally are awesome.

Go figure.

No, my main objection to rap/hip-hop is not so much what I consider crap poetry, but the blatant theft of other people's music which is generally CRAPPED on, more than rapped.

And now, not just hip-hop but some Charlie has put a fast rave back-beat onto ABITW, pt2. Can you adam-and-eve it?

If it was actually any good, I doubt it would need such ardent justification, but take no notice of this product of the South Central, West Side "ghetto." Keep wearing the jeans below your butt and walk like you've cacked your pants. The hip-hop brotherhood (aka music industry) will claim you as one of their own. Idealistic, but socially bankrupt by bling bias.

I cannot see the appeal, frankly as I only grew up beneath the shadows of self-indulgent prison-minded society of my "gangsta" fellows at home, at school, and even at play. Personally, Dre, Snoop, Fiddy and the rest, including the reactionary, East Side hip-hopster, Will Smith, deserve whatever they get, as do their followers.

The Old World (Oz, France and even Romania) also deserves hip-hop to show them exactly how to live in fear and distrust of their own youth. I say, hip-hop-along.

my problem is with the very people who make this music...this is who the "gangsta" youth of america look up to...2 people who frequent the same Starbucks at me were shot for no reason...

NO I TAKE IT BACK:the "young rapper" had a legitamate reason...he went in store with a bag of loose quarters...the counter person told him he had to roll the coins...punk stormed out and started harassing people in front of store...finally someone called the police...when cops approached him,he shot female in cheek, that is lodged against against the back of her neck...the male cop rushed the punk and took 2 shots before tackling and subdoing him...all this took place 1 block from entertainment district where 100's of young people are walking every nite...

Re: The Hip Hop Thread

I very much enjoyed the episode of the Sopranos where the wannabe 50 Cent guy paid Bobby to shoot him to increase his credibility and the doofus shot him in the backside, thereby rendering him a laughing stock for all time.

Sheer genius.

Very sad about Vito though.

Tupac, I think, is a better example of violent rappers. But he's one guy.

I, on the other hand, own an 18" machete. I bought it legally, and brought it to my house in my car, also legally. I even use it periodically, for its design purpose.

I don't think all rap sounds the same...I just think it sounds shite. However that is only my opinion and each to their own.

Please pull your head out..

You actually think that the violence on the streets is a direct result of hip hop music and hip hop musicians?
It has nothing to do with the socio-economic problems facing the african american community? Brought on by centuries of racism, slavery etc?

Nope, nothing to do with that. It's ALL cos of the rap music.
The streets of america would be peaceful if we just got rid of every hip hop/rap musician.

Nice one

oh dear, my friend Edan would completely disagree

Prince Paul already used this loop
But I'ma keep it movin' and put you up on the scoop
I first saw the world in 78
Around the same time rap music source first played
Nowadays my name should be the kingpin with words
Kids should drop my personality like King Tim the third
Word to the fat back queen with the sugar hills
I should be splicing verse without the payment of a dollar bill
I gots to chill though or think about sex
'Cause if whiskey fills my third leg
Or should I say the second neck?
Connect the dots with all the faggots making records
Who couldn't suck a dick or put the gloss on the upper lip
They can't **** with this I'm just too vivid
Like rainbows falling out the sky and turn liquid
My word systems turn your scene to tangerine
The kid sees colors flashing wild on his movie screen

[ chorus ]
Red and yellow and pink and green
Purple and orange and blue
I can sing a rainbow
I can sing a rainbow

[ verse 2]
I love most brothers but someone told me that I burn bridges
I simply use a rapper's bones to build to build my third niche
I work with the aesthetic of a brain medic
Cutting up the reels with crystal shards to make the tape edit
I take lettuce, onions, tomatoe
Add a dab of mayo plus the fish fillet-o
Appetizing gray matter with a strange platter
The symmetry of energy with chemistry and plasma
After you latch on to lost masters
Come back to re-evaluate the now chapter
Style masters born to make classics
And paint canvas geometric break dances
The almighty made Saturn caves and caverns
The flames of magma rivers in Niagara
All of this beauty can be yours to discover
Can't you see it brother?
Without the LSD I see colors

Re: The Hip Hop Thread

I don't particularly like rap/hip-hop - but somedays I just gotta listen to some Eminem or something. *shrug*

Hip-hop is no more or no less a form of music and art than the blues, rock or jazz. I'm all with NNJ on this one - there good music, there's shit music and which is which depends on you.

And as for "rap" encouraging bad behaviour - ya'll sound just like PMRC against rock music and Frank Zappa has a lot of things he wants to tell you[Start here]. In fact, Eminem jokes about this very thing in one of his songs:

Quote:
They say music can alter moods and talk to you
But can it load a gun for you and cock it too?
Well if it can, then the next time you assault a dude
Just tell the judge it was my fault, and i'll get sued

See what these kids do, is hear about us toting pistols
And they want to get one, cos they think the shit's cool
Not knowin' we're really just protectin' ourselves
We're entertainers, of course this shit's affecting our sales

We still want to blame Marilyn Manson and heavy metal for Coumbine?
Or Led Zeppelin for their perverted devil music that was (and still is) "destroying" our youth?

Plenty of people listen to rock and rap and live decent lives - what's good for the goose must be good for the gander too, right?

The number one TV shows today all deal with violence, murder of some sort or the other. "We train young men to drop fire on people but won't allow them to write **** on their airplanes because it's obscene" ... or something along those lines.

LOL - I'm not sure I'm making a coherant argument here!

cheers,

Re: The Hip Hop Thread

Rap is not responsible for a violent lifestyle
A violent lifestyle is responsible for rap.

You always get kids trying to imitate their superstar role models. If a kid listens to a lot of Bright Eyes he'll probably start feeling pretty sad. In my case it was Alice in Chains. I listened to Alice in Chains so much that I started to really believe I was as depressed as Layne Staley.

So maybe some of the impressionable kids who listen to violent rap, who may have a similar upbringing as the rappers they listen to, may take it upon themselves to solve their problems in a manner similar to the ones the rappers may tell about or even recommend.

But I don't think the point of this thread is to justify this sort of thing. I think the point of this thread is to say THAT IS NOT THE CASE WITH THE ENTIRE GENRE OF RAP AND ANY OTHER HIP HOP INFLUENCED MUSIC.

Three words: Right Wing Newspaper.

First, it is a liberal paper. Second, I wasn't arguing any point, just giving an example of how some people see rap's influence. I never said anything about believing that this was rap's fault. Obviously this is more like gang violence, but because of the lyrics, the killer can make a compelling argument that the song played a part.
