Electronic Music

There was another thread sort of addressing this, but it was more about rock.

I want to talk about actual electronic music.
Does anyone here like it?
Floyd dabbled in electronica (on the run is a synth loop w/ sound effects!)

I like Mum, LCD Soundsystem, Boards of Canada, M83, Air, plus more. I'm still on the search for new, good electronic music. I think it's absolutely great.

I don't know a whole lot about it, to be honest. But it intrigues me.

Re: Electronic Music

Begin with the classics:

Tangerine Dream
- TD solos: Edgar Froese, Klaus Schultz
Jean Michel Jarre: Magnetic Fields, Oxygene
Tomita
Kitaro
Alan Parsons Project
Vangelis

...in that order

Try Röyksopp, they're good! Their second album 'The Understanding' is the better one in my opinon

Re: Electronic Music

The Propellerheads
Talvin Singh
The Books
DJ Shadow
Aphex Twin
The Chemical Brothers
DJ Krush
Dosh
Corenlius
Manitoba (Now known as Caribou)
St Germain (think acid jazz)
Sixtoo
Squarepusher

There's a few amazing Aussie artists doing their thing

Pivot (Actually a band, but the sound is similar)
Gotye
Mountains in the Sky
Qua

There is Sydney's great guide to amazing electronic music. My friend is in a band (an actual band with instruments and what not) but they do have a sampler and they are very inspired by electronic music and they got me onto all of the above stuff.

Re: Electronic Music

I listen to a lot of music that heavily uses electronic instruments; like Nine Inch Nails, Chroma Key, O.S.I., Depeche Mode, Secret Chiefs 3, etc.

Re: Electronic Music

I respect it, like any other kind of music. But I prefer stuff that's a little more organic.

Re: Electronic Music

I fail to see how it's any less organic. It still takes musical knowledge, thought, inspiration, and mergence of sounds to create music.

It's just as organic as any other form of musical or artistic expression, imo.

Re: Electronic Music

I think he means organic in the sense of more "natural" sorts of instruments.

But, electricity is natural. It's how our own human brain works!

Re: Electronic Music

I like electronic music though it is a genre that I haven't explored much. I have heard some remixes that other people have done of Björk's songs and some of them are quite good. Also, I like the Chemical Brothers and as pioneers in this genre Tangerine Dream are outstanding as well.

I'm even going to work on a kind of electronic solo project when I finish the heavily acoustic one that I'm working on right now. But, still, I want to merge the sound of acoustic instruments in the project. I've got some ideas but I'll see how they work when I start recording the songs. I think it will be quite fun.

A personal favourite of mine is the track "Runaway" in Rick Wright's "Broken China" though it may not be exactly considered as "electronic".

Re: Electronic Music

Greg Davis answers the above conundrum between 'electronic v. organic'. I saw a show of his in which he rustled through dry leaves, fed the noise into his laptop, turned it into a loop, and over a 45-minute period created a holy racket of overwhelming sound.

Re: Electronic Music

i listen electro most of time..
my fave groups are
Kraftwerk (old school)
Autechre
Boards of Canada
Ladytron (electroclash)
Jan Jelinek

and what i like very very much:
Daft Punk
The Knife
Mouse on Mars
To Rococo Rot
Barbara Morgenstern
Rechenzentrum
Jackson and his computer band
LCD Soundsystem (dance dance) :]
Client (electroclash)
Prodigy
Chemical Brothers

mostly germans :]

Mum are great but they are mostly experimental, somehow like Sigur ros (but not the same)

i used to listen to EBM (electro body music, some mixture of goth, dark and electro, lots of great music and lots of crap) so much during high school days, now i kinda stopped, not that i don't like it, but when you have bands like those up i wrote, don;t need it, but still like to hear Diorama and KMFDM sometimes

we have here in Belgrade in my town, festival called DISPATCH, every year, here come so many great electronic bands/people
few times here came Rechenzentrum, that was unbelievable beautiful
and last year (it's always in october), Jan Jelinek presented his Kosmischer Pitch (Jan on electronics, guy on drums, guy on guitar) and it was beautiful noise electropostrock if i can put it that way
and the same evening, To Rococo Rot (they are now veterans ), again, one man on electronic, one on drums and one on bass guitar

i love it, when using guitar in that cause, for some experimental and electro work, i myself have never been a fan of guitar solos, that;s just boring to me (that;s why i love gilmour, he has few long solos but are great but good god i can;t listen to steve vai or satriani or sth like that althoug they kick ass on guitar)

and yes Of Montreal are nice, their last few albums have electronic
if anybody needs links for new Of Montreal, Mum Peel Session, Mouse on Mars etc can check on my blog autobahn604.blogspot.com and i have more, so i can pm u :]

Röyksopp is a great band from Bergen, Norway!!! Another good electronic band from this city is Ralph Myerz and the Jack Herren Band.
