| Re: Don't Leave Me Now If you listen to the song alone, it can go either way for me. Either I get irritated by the awful lyrics or the slower pace of the track. If I'm in the mood for it, however, it's fine. When I listen to "One of My Turns" first, it's different, and it works every time. It's very much a two-part (as the entire record is); "Don't Leave Me Now" acts as a section of a whole song. You can even go further back at "Empty Spaces." I break it down as follows: "Empty Spaces": His wife is gone, his life is empty...what shall he do? Put on his facade of The Wall and find something new? Buy a new guitar? Drive a more powerful car? Etc etc. "Young Lust": 'confident,' sexy guy looking for "some woman" to "make [him] feel like a real man" (as opposed to...?) "One of My Turns": He and the groupie get to his place, he watches TV, she makes sexual remarks when she finds the tub, and he starts ranting about how bad his life is. He gets pissed, emotional, and scares her away the same way he ushered his wife out of his life. "Don't Leave Me Now": Here, Pink is broken, alone, nothing. The vocals, for me, no longer feel week and annoying, but desperate and emotional. Where he was so set on not only his wife, but then the fling he found, both have left. He doesn't even have the capability to keep a HOOKER in his room for more than three minutes and twenty-five seconds. Not only does this impact him, but the anger over the loss of his wife fades into the emptiness of being alone. The outro with Gilmour is perfect in my eyes, and the transition into "Another Brick In the Wall (Part III)" is great, hearkening back to the television obsession--which, might I say, Roger doesn't give on with this or even the next record. Thus, "Don't Leave Me Now" may not be as interesting on its own (unless you've just had a breakup or so), but is such an incredible addition to the love story in The Wall. He's gone from defiance to rage to desperation to emptiness, back to the defiance. In fact, that cycle repeats in the record from "The Show Must Go On," to "Stop," after which he loses the narrative and its given over to the other characters for a bit. So, yeah, I like it. xD |
