Database or Server not found.

Ok, only when I use my laptop and only from my home, I get one of two messages, error in Database or Server Not Found. I can never log on from my home. My laptop has Firefox installed. Have I been IP banned? Any suggestions out there?

Re: Database or Server not found.

Another site member had this prob last night, they were also using firefox although they did get on eventually.

As for me the site has been running really slow and I have had the same message a couple of times although not in last 24 hours. I don't use firefox.

Re: Database or Server not found.

I think that I'm the other user that the be-mulleted big-shoed one refers to and, yes, I've been able to get on twice in the last two weeks or something, even when I know for fact that others are on the site at the same time.

I also use Firefox.

People who don't are callously throwing themselves into the hands of the evil gods of adware on a daily basis.

A mystery requires an enigma at it's heart (rather than a working class person with ginger hair from Liverpool).

Re: Database or Server not found.

Unfortunately, our DNS servers went down a couple of weeks ago. DNS is how IP addresses get translated to alphanumerical addresses, and there is a thing called "DNS cache". Even when we got the problems fixed, most computers (if not all) that tried to access pinkfloydfan.net when it was down had the non-functioning DNS address cached.

To sum it up, it may take anywhere from 12 hours to several days for the DNS cache to be refreshed, which is why you (and myself!) are now able to access APFFN, but you had trouble doing so for some time before.

I'm really sorry about this and any inconveniences (including any abstinence syndrome symptoms) this may have caused you.

Cheers,

Paulo

Re: Database or Server not found.

Hi guys.

I've been trying for sometime to get on using mine own ip address (xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx)
I'm using a proxy server now just so I can tell you that I'm having problems.

Is there a fix out there? I have asked others to try and some of them also can't connect to your site.

Kevin

PS I'm NOT on firefox. IE. ANd this proxy server is soooooo slow!!!!!

I've edited out your IP address to possibly save you some problems. I'll pass your post to Paulo as well, so he can have a look.

Some tech stuff that might help:

To check to see if name lookups work, open a DOS command prompt, and type "nslookup pinkfloydfan.net". This should return the following -
Quote:
C:\Documents and Settings\Rob>nslookup pinkfloydfan.net
Server: Rtdsys-1
Address: 10.23.15.254

Non-authoritative answer:
Name: pinkfloydfan.net
Address: 72.36.152.186
What you've done is sent a request to your DNS server & received the IP address assigned to APFFN. If the answer you get is a different IP for pinkfloydfan.net, your DNS cache is out of date. If you get an answer that says 'nonexistent domain', then either there's a problem with your DNS or APFFN is down (or its nameserver, which is much the same thing). Either way, bitch to your ISP - you wouldn't believe the number of badly configured DNS's out there.

Even if you do not get the right address, try opening the page using 'http://72.36.152.186'. If that works, you probably do have some sort of dns issue. If it doesn't work, either APFFN is down or it has been blocked by a firewall or webfilter.

There are a number of other possibilities, but too tedious to go into here.

Thank you for reading, and in next week's edition, how to bypass webfilters put up by schools to protect mommy's little darlings, without using a proxy.

Re: Database or Server not found.

Our webfilters at school aren't put up to protect anybody, they're put up to keep us from fucking around during classes where we have access to a computer.

Microsoft Windows 2000 [Version 5.00.2195]
(C) Copyright 1985-2000 Microsoft Corp.

C:\Documents and Settings\KLeefarr>nslookup pinkfloydfan.net
*** Can't find server name for address ***.***.**.**: Non-existent domain
*** Default servers are not available
Server: UnKnown
Address: ***.***.**.**

*** UnKnown can't find pinkfloydfan.net: Server failed

C:\Documents and Settings\KLeefarr>

The 'http://72.36.152.186' works because I'm using a proxy to log in again. (Its actually quite a fast proxy as well)
