Your First Favorite

What was the first band/artist or whatever that really grabbed you?

The first band I really really got into was Metallica. I loved Metallica because I loved the guitar soloes, it was angry, and it pointed out problems with other people. After that, most of my music choice was based on that sort of thing and I think that says a lot about who I am.

I started liking Pink Floyd because the guitar soloes were great and the lyrics were about other people.

So how did your first favorite band (or if it wasn't a band, it could be something else) pave the way for the things you liked after that? And how does it relate to your Pink Floyd journey?

Re: Your First Favorite

What did you like about those people? Are the traits of Spice Girls and Korn that you found desirable present in the music you like now?

Re: Your First Favorite

R.E.M. I listened to all of their albums countless times. It was my parents' doing of course; they would occasionally play "Automatic For The People" around me when I was young, and eventually I liked it. R.E.M. at Red Rocks was also my first proper rock concert.

The first song, though, that I really liked was Peter Gabriel's "Sledgehammer" (my parents also listened to him), which I would listen to over and over again. Eventually I got "So" and listened to that often...then for some reason I lost interest in PG for a couple years. But then I became an even bigger PG/Genesis fan and love them both to this day.

Re: Your First Favorite

As far as I know I have always liked Pink Floyd the most, even when I was just a small child. No one else in my family liked them so it really is a mystery how I got so much into them...

...or perhaps not. I can relate to a lot of lyrics and situations from "The Wall" and "WYWH". Back in those days I didn't know a word of English so I suppose it was the music that connected directly with the way I was feeling.

Other than that I remember being very small (not older than 10) and getting into the records that my big brother was listening to which were Santana, The Beatles (post "Revolver" era) and Deep Purple. Specially the latter as I would keep humming to the tune of "Smoke on the Water". I also remember the summer of '85 when "Money for Nothing" came out and I was blown away by the video, the riff and the intro.

Oh yes, and I also liked Madonna...

Re: Your First Favorite

First big favorite band was Nirvana or Bush. (Junior high was full of the 'flannel/grunge/theworldisfucked' stuff) I was also really into Hole for a brief period.
According to my mother, I had a big liking for 4 Non Blondes and the Beatles as well (played the albums a lot), but those years have kind of blurred for me.

Yeah, my first big favorite was Nirvana. That's lasted pretty well until now, but I don't listen to them nearly as much as I used to.

Re: Your First Favorite

The first band, funnily enough, that grabbed me into music would have been The Beastie Boys when I was about 11 years old. Then I grew out of the Rap stage and into Metal which Guns N Roses first brought me into, then I was enthralled with Metallica for a while. Then it was Led Zeppelin and finally I listened to Echoes on a "trip" while out at the beach with some friends and have never looked anywhere else as far as the most influential band is. I think Pink Floyd is by far the greatest band that has ever graced music!

well, back in my 12 i liked Limp Bizkit, Coldplay, Eminem and Linkin Park a lot... but my REAL first favourite would be GUNS N ROSES by the time I was 14 more or less...and by the way...just 4 days more for their show here in Mexico
