Re: Broken China

I just heard Broken China yesterday. One word..WOW!!! Floydwaters is right, Rick is amazing. My vote for favourite solo work now goes to Rick just with this one album. Fixxy said it's on par with ATD, but i think it leaves it for dead. As said the textures and atmosphere is simply electric. The thing i love most about PF was the way they manage to evolve into different phases in music history. Rick has certainly continued this. Although in his 50's (or 60's), this album stands proudly among any work done in the 90's. If you ain't heard it, you must!! That is your mission Floydians. Richard Wright - Brokend China - Masterpiece.

Oh! Just one question, maybe Floydwaters knows. Does Jeff Beck also play on that album? If not, who is the guitarist/s?

Re: Broken China

I think Tim Renwick is the guitarist on Broken China.

(Heh, 69 posts and rank of Ummagumma.)

Re: Broken China

Tim Renwick is one of the guitarists, yes. Dominic Miller also plays on some tracks. Steve Bolton plays rhythm guitar on one track--but is very kindly awarded a credit for his work! You'll find Mr. Wright VERY carefully gives credit when due! (What a gentleman!)

And to Pedge--I'm sorry I didn't get to your comments earlier. That was fixxy posting my review of Broken China, with the ATD comment (and it was very kind of him to do that). Broken China is on par with ATD...they are opposite albums. One musically centred; the other is lyrically centred. Clearly I have my favourite.

And yes--he's right. You see...I'm showing this album to people one by one. Who knows? Maybe I can get something going here!

And, of course...hats off to Mr. Wright for this beautiful work of his.

Re: Broken China

"Broken China" is wonderful. I, too, just picked it up recently. I liked "Wet Dream" also (excellent guitar work by Snowy White, another favourite of mine). "Amused To Death" isn't even close to "Broken China". At least Rick came up with something original whereas Roger just did another rehash of "The Final Cut".

Re: Broken China

I am so glad to see that more people are now becoming aware of this wonderful artist and his work. It's about time.

"Wet Dream" is a beautiful album, too. In parts I think it's a lament on what IS (I think the two of us would understand each other there...conflict hurts)--but at the same time, a dream of what could BE. It is the idea of standing at a crossroads...leaving one life and moving to the next. When I heard this...I believe he saw everything coming from a long way away.

Re: Broken China

I like Wet Dream alot, though it's somewhat different than I originally imagined it would be. I had thought it would be more upbeat than it is. It turned out to be more laid back, with lyrics that are rather depressing. But I suppose this can be expected, as this was a very difficult time in Rick's life. It's a great album anyways, very real.

Re: Broken China

And therein lies the problem, Thorin.

But thank you so much for trying!

As for the lyrics...yeah, they really were despondent in some places. But the thing is--I IDENTIFY with this. I am not the kind of person, like Mr. Waters, who seems to thrive on conflict. It slowly eats at me. I hate it; it makes me feel terrible. I do not like to fight--it isn't in my nature. When I try to defend myself, somehow my efforts fall short and I don't know why. And I get this overwhelming desire to just get AWAY.

"Holiday" kind of picks up at the end, even lyrically--the thought of sailing is so pleasant! I have never actually sailed...yet for so long I have not been able to get the idea out of my head. In fact...I think I will learn. The ocean has a hold on me that I can't explain.

Someday I may post a poem inspired by this album that I wrote just a few weeks ago...

Re: Broken China

I'm resigned i'll never have a copy of Pros&Cons and one of Broken China, "out of production". That's sad cause Waters is by far my fav solo artist and Broken China would have been interesting for a guy who suffers of serious clinical depressions like me.

What? Broken China is by Rick Wright. Not Roger Waters.

Re: Broken China

Hicks, even though Broken China is supposedly out of production, you can still order it from a few places, such as CDNow.com, Amazon.com, and I suspect you could pick it up used on eBay.

Re: Broken China

Radiochair and Thorin, I meant:

1) I'm afraid i'll never have a Pros&Cons original copy --> cause Waters is my fav solo artist

2) I'm afraid i'll never have a Broken China original copy --> cause I have probs with depression and so BC would have been an interesting subject to me.

Of course i knew BC is not a Waters work, I put P&C in my post cause it is out of production like BC, and i just wanted to point this out.
