Re: Broken China

Hicks, I see you identify with the story Mr. Wright is telling. I have my own reasons--the inspiration to hope and courage. I hope you are prepared for a very cathartic experience. It may be difficult at times (translation--have tissue ready), but as it progresses towards the fourth "movement", the release--the healing--is INCREDIBLE, and beautiful (translation--MORE tissue!). But I really think you'll find it inspiring.

Re: Broken China

Well if the story has not a bad ending i can't say i fully identify with it (Rog's pessimism is a bit more my way), but the subject is interesting and i see you really love it (i noticed at least 3 topics in which you promote it), and obviously i love all the Wright stuff with PF.
I hope i'll find it soon somewhere...
Hopefully before committing suicide

Re: Broken China

Well, you should find it at either Amazon.com or www.cdnow.com, I think.

The pessimism of Mr. Waters--I can handle it, but only in measured doses. Too much, and it puts me in a bad mood all day. I need some optimism, and that's what Mr. Wright often seems to focus on.

Oh...and I hope you're feeling all right...?

Well, at least if you did, I somehow suspect your copy would find a loving new home...

Re: Broken China

is this album really slow paced, or are there more up tempo songs on it as well? in other words, does the whole album sound like 'wearing the inside out'? not bad, but a bit too slow for my tastes. i like his uptempo synth playing. like 'any colour you like' or something of that nature. answer?

Re: Broken China

They all have different tempos. Some are very slow with no rhythm at all (almost operatic, in a strange way), and on the extreme opposite end, a few of them are fast, driving songs with a touch of techno.

Some faster, rhythmically interesting tracks would be (in my opinion):

"Night of 1000 Furry Toys"
"Runaway"
"Satellite"
"Woman of Custom"
(possibly "Far from the Harbour Wall")
"Along the Shoreline"

The majority are slower--but you'll find that with the positioning of these songs, the change between tempos makes it interesting.

Re: Broken China

Though hardly, IMO, of the calibre of "Any Colour You Like", I think there are only three tracks that might satisfy your request, if at all: "Satellite" (definitely), "Runaway" and "Night of a 1000 Furry Toys" (possibly).

Shine on!
Byron

p.s. to FWr: Funny, I was re-checking the tracks on BROKEN CHINA, and at the end of "Black Cloud" the guitar sounds VERY similar to the guitar intro to "Empty Spaces" from THE WALL.

Hmmmm...black cloud, empty spaces, the wall, broken china

Re: Broken China

I've never noticed any resemblance...if anything, the strongest resemblance to a Floydian song is in "Along the Shoreline", where that second guitar solo reminds me strongly of "Run Like Hell" (except much more optimistic).

Re: Broken China

Well then, I can only suggest you listen and listen again closely to the fading in of the guitar during the finalé of "Black Cloud."

It sounds remarkably the same.

Re: Broken China

Reading through this thread has got me stoked for hearing "Broken China". I've always known Rick was a Jazz-fusion guy (which I am not) so I've never paid any attention to his solo stuff. But to hear the enthusiasm from "youse guys" along with the revelation that my favorite unknown guitar player, Tim Renwick, is featured......wow. I gotta go to AudioGalaxy (better than Morpheus) and see what I can find!

Re: Broken China

Just wanted to let everyone know that the whole "Broken China" album IS on AudioGalaxy. I downloaded "Runaway" and loved it.....I should have known. I loved Rick's "Wearing the Inside Out" on TDB.

Re: Broken China

Congratulations!

I think you'll find the whole album very enjoyable. As I said, though, the guitar is kind of second to the keyboards as far as prominence, but you should find some emotional playing that's to your satisfaction!
