Agreed... it wears thin after a while though (and that's Alan Stiles talking, one of the Floyd's roadies, not Rick).

I've noticed a lot of people talking about the enery felt at the beginning of Atom Heart Mother Suite; I always noticed that energy and felt it from the very first time I heard the song. I love it. It really showed us WHO Pink Floyd was at the time, and it also was kind of a preview of better albums to come.

That's the thing...those sound effects, and stuff like the buzzing bee on Granchester Meadows was groundbreaking at the time...but that doesn't always translate into a good listen. I'm glad PF later found out how to create an atmosphere just using their music.

I dunno, it seems like everytime I hear him say "toast, coffee", or when I hear him munching down his breakfast I automatically get a big grin on my face. But I also agree, their music is much better than their sound effects, although what would Floyd be without all the little crazy noises in the background or all the voices you hear in your head?? I don't think it would be the same.

Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast WAS the genesis of the classic "Marmalade, I like marmalade line", which is funny just the way he says it. It's almost as famous as Beefheart's "fast n' bulbous" quip.

True, these myriad traits that are prevalent on most PF albums add a lot to the atmosphere. My point was that PF learned to create most of the atmosphere just using their music, rather than just trying to create atmos just using sound effects.

It's a great album taken experimentaly or not (unlike Uma which the studio disk can only really be taken for experimantal value). The title track is especially cool, in fact it's so good i bought a shirt with the front cover on it. Alan's may not be an all time Floyd high but it's good enough and shows them doing something different, the fillers are also good showing the different ideas of each member, Gilmour's in particular stands out.

Atom Heart Mother is one of my favorite songs ever. Not just Pink Floyd. It's just sooooo good! Musical bliss. The ONLY two problems with it are:

1. Not necessariliy a problem, but during the funky section, it seems to me that the guitar solo comes in a little too late. It's not really a problem, but every time I hear it I expect it to come earlier.

2. The non-musical "weird" section (also found in Echoes) takes away from the song.

Other then those minor problems, AHT is PERFECT!

Well it's Pink Floyd in the early 70s, there's gotta be some weird noises!

It think that it's clever and smart of them to try and restate the themes before doing the main theme for the end (like a recapitulation) but just having them play all together at once was kinda cheap. But since the band really wasn't familiar with classical music, It's cool they thought of it anyway. I think Atom Heart Mother is their masterpiece, showcasing everything the band respresented and sounded like and then some. A perfect fusion of classical music, rock, and funny noises!

I rather like this part of the song; it always sounds very spooky when I listen to it in the dark with the strobe light blaring. It gives you a break from the music for a liile while, but then the band kicks back in with just as much energy as they had earlier in the song.

With 'Atm Hrt Mthr', Pink Floyd had really come a long way. They went from 'More' & 'Ummagumma' in the late 60's into 'Atm Hrt Mthr', which really showed what this amazing band was capable of.

I like the late 60's work, but I think there is too much "pshychadelica" involved.
