"The Happiest Days of Our Lives" features a helicopter sound. Also, for just a brief second, so does "Take It Back"--but that one is really not much of anything at all.

I would have to listen again, but it sounds more like a propellor-driven plane. I will get back to you on this, because I am more familiar with the PULSE version than the original, and I'll advise after a listen to the original tomorrow.

It's not actually a helicopter. Just one of the ol' synthesizers. I think.

By the way, Does anyone know why they put a helicopter sound in the beginning of Happiest dayz? Same question for the plane at the end of In the Flesh?

The plane at the end of ITF--If you've ever seen the movie, this is the plane that killed Mr. Waters' father at Anzio. As for the helicopter in "The Happiest Days of Our Lives", my guess would be that it shows exactly how helpless the students were to do anything about the injuries their teachers did to them. It elevates them almost to demigod status--but with a frightening caprice.

Yeah I think it's supposed to be like a police surveillance chopper...and that's where the "stand still laddie" voice is coming from. Supposed to give a feeling that you couldn't hide from the teachers. "However carefully hidden by the kid..." Plus it gave them a good excuse to make planes crash into the stage and stuff during their concerts.

Yeah i agree with Floydwaters and Driven. It gives the piece a feel of the teachers having total control of the children - like a high security prison. If you watch sinpets of The Wall in 1980, the helicopter sound was presented with an infatable teacher hovering over the audience with lights coming out of his eyes. I think it gives the feeling of "you can run, but you cant hide".

Last Saturday's BBC Radio 2 program on Pink Floyd has Roger, or Richard, or Nick describing their first major record company signing, EMI, and saying how they discovered the Sound Effects Library, took to it like a bunch of schoolboys on Christmas day and never looked back. So, simply suitable sound effects, one supposes.
