| Bobby Fischer -- Checkmated Bobby Fischer, the greatest chessmaster ever produced by the USA, passed away yesterday in Reykjavik. He was one crazy sonafabitch, but I couldn't help but like the guy. A Jewish-American, he, ironically, hated both Jews and the United States. His match with Boris Spassky in 1972 is legend. (Somewhere, Boris is breathing a sigh of relief.) RIP, Bobby

When I was a kid in the 70's, he was held up as an icon of intellectualism. It was a pity to learn, years later, how really one-dimensional he was. But he was a really great chess player, and he proved it. That's an OK epitaph, in my book.

| Re: Bobby Fischer -- Checkmated He was the poster child for genius gone completely mad. I've been looking at his matches v. Spassky on chessgames.com for the last couple of days, and his game is a thing of beauty. RIP Bobby Fischer, chess genius, & too bad so sad Bobby Fischer, crazy raving lunatic.
