Constant Holiday

Today is 3/14, by American notation, and therefore happy Pi Day to all!

While I hope we don't create more holidays honoring mathematical constants, most being difficult to understand and rather dry, I think pi is unique in that it is one of the earliest recognized irrational numbers, has resulted in thousands of arguments about biblical infallibility, and is easy to understand by anyone. The ratio of a circles circumference to its diameter is one of the earliest engineering tools, and a basic clue to the workings of the universe.

So, honor pi, the irrational number underlying the rational world, the precisely inexpressible value which expresses nearly everything we sense.

Plus, with the wife and kids gone, I've completely geeked out.

Re: Constant Holiday

I'm a pi guy too.

It's fascinating that pi has been calculated out to over a trillion decimal places without a discernable pattern of repetition.

Here's to pi, that crazy little constant that makes all our calculations work out!

Re: Constant Holiday

My kids also celebrated pi day. 1:59:26 in the afternoon was especially sacred...

You mean, some undetermined time between 1:59:26 and 1:59:27...
